"Pharmacists are ideally placed to advise patients on the use of dressings, encouraging best practice and ongoing self-care in suitable patients. Patients should be informed to use dressings correctly, in line with agreed treatment goals" (Ousey et al, 2021)
Reason 1: The scope of practice of pharmacists in acute wound care management is expanding in Australia, and we need education before we can provide a Wound Care Service.
Reason 2: You can establish an innovative Wound Care Clinic and deliver a valuable and impactful service to your community.
Reason 3: Pharmacists are an integral part of the Allied health care team and need to be skilled and knowledgeable in wound care, and collaborate with local health services.
Reason 4: We need Wound Care Pharmacists and Teams to help us tackle the global Wound Care Challenge together, NOW.
"420,000 people suffer each from a chronic wound in Australia. The Australian government spends $3 billion of the budget each year on wounds" (Wounds Australia, 2022)
Solution 1: Improve Wound Care EDUCATION for allied health professionals
Solution 2: Utilise the PHARMACIST workforce to manage acute wounds and triage chronic wounds
Solution 3: SUBSIDISE wound care products and services in primary care for people at risk of chronic wounds
Solution 4: Build REFERRAL pathways in the community for timely management and access to wound care

I have always been quite unsure with wounds but I have found with this course I am a lot more confident with my recommendations in the pharmacy and when having discussions with patients. I am looking forward to completing part 2 and setting up a wound care service within our pharmacy.
